Meat vs. Rice; American Manhood against Asiatic Coolieism, Which shall survive?
Dublin Core
Title
Meat vs. Rice; American Manhood against Asiatic Coolieism, Which shall survive?
Description
In the 1902 pamphlet, American Federation of Labor president Samuel Gompers, writer Herman Guttstadt, and Maine Senator James Blaine argue that Chinese labor posed a threat to the white American working class and, in doing so, invoke racist stereotypes about Chinese people and their diet as an argument for their exclusion. Chinese immigrants were called "scabs in the American labor force," and deemed uncivilized, effeminate, and intrinsically un-American because of their rice-based diet.
